BMW

BMW recently brought out some of the most controversial designs of the last decade in automobiles. The traditional "double lung" grille has taken on mammoth dimensions in the BMW M3 and M4 and finally in the upcoming BMW iX electric SUV .

The Munich house is very convinced of his choices despite the criticisms received. Domagoj Dukec, head of design at BMW, said that good design is not tied to the concepts of good or bad, calling the 4 Series "an elegant car with very good proportions" In the case of the BMW iX, the grille also has a more symbolic than practical value : electric vehicles certainly do not need to let large quantities flow into the mechanical parts.

CEO Oliver Zipse spoke on the topic, interviewed by Reuters:“If you look at what's happening on the market with these platforms [the cars developed purely as electric], the cars all look alike. BMW serves very specific and wealthy customers, I think they don't want cars that look alike ” .

But do the electric ones really look alike? We have our doubts. Take for example the newly introduced KIA EV6 and sister Hyundai Ioniq 5 , both are crossovers and both are built on the E-GMP platform, yet feature a completely different design approach . In addition, there are those who design the nose as a huge fake grille, as in the new Nissan Ariya, and those who use electric propulsion to completely get rid of the concept of the grille , see the Lexus LF-Z Electrified Concept.
