The Mustang Mach-E have two batteries, the main battery and another small lead battery of 12 volts. The latter is kept level by drawing energy from the main lithium-ion battery. However, there is a problem that would prevent this battery from being powered when the car is plugged into a charger.
Not all Mach-E owners would be affected. It appears that this concern affects some of the vehicles built until February 3 . The problem would particularly affect owners in colder parts of the world, which is why Ford recommends leaving the Mach-E plugged in to warm it up before driving for now. Mach-E's currently coming off production lines would not be affected .
The small 12 volt battery is used by the car to power a lot of equipment . However, some drivers had the unpleasant surprise to see this battery go out, preventing the car from starting . Fortunately, we did not encounter this problem during our test of the Ford Mustang Mach-E .
According to Ford, this problem will be corrected with an update "later in the year". However, owners of vehicles affected by the bug will be able to visit a dealership to correct it. Ford offers free roadside assistance with the Mustang Mach-E . Owners can have their electric SUV towed to a dealership. Good news, this roadside assistance would also include restarts of the 12-volt battery.
It would apparently be possible to restart the 12 volt battery yourself as you might for a technical car, but the process is not straightforward. The first problem is that the battery is located behind the front trunk of the Mustang Mach-E, and the electronic hood lock is powered by the battery that you just need to restart .
Therefore, owners must first open a panel in the front bumper containing two wires . These can be used to release the electronic lock on the front trunk lid. Finally, you will have to remove a panel under the hood to find the battery.
