New engine, new chassis and a more exclusive standard equipment, the first of the "dark side of Japan" saga becomes all new. After the teaser videos finally Yahama released galleries and technical specifications of the new naked that in 2013 changed the rules of the market a little and opened a successful strand. Let's talk about the new Yamaha MT-09.
In the MT strand has evolved but has remained substantially unchanged from the initial model and with this evolution the philosophy has not been lost but has refined. Of the approximately 250,000 pieces sold throughout the Yamaha MT range, more than 100,000 are of the MT-09 divided equally between the two versions. In the latest evolution, the SP version was also introduced precisely to fill the gaps of the basic versions and satisfy the most demanding drivers. Instead with the 2021 model we have a starting level with higher standards.
FEATURES OF THE YAMAHA MT-09
We start from theengine , the new three-cylinder Crossplane that has been completely redesigned, obtaining a more powerful and light unit – the saving compared to the previous unit is in fact 700 grams. The displacement rises to 889 cc thanks to an increase in reaming of 3 mm. At the performance level, this results in a maximum power increase of 4 hp for a total of 119 hp 10,000 rpm. The most important benefits, given the category of the Yamaha MT-09, however, are at torque level, with a maximum value of 93 Nm expressed 1,400 rpm lower than the previous model, at 7000 rpm.
The power supply system is also new, with the injectors moving forward going to direct the jet directly to the back of the valve mushrooms, improving the spraying of the fuel and thus obtaining a better combustion efficiency, reducing consumption by up to 9%. It also changes the YCC-T ride-by-wire control system with a sensor-mounted sensor control directly on the knob as it does on the YZF-R1. The suction pattern and a completely new and 1.5 kg lighter exhaust are also different
The revolution also involves cycling, revised both the Deltabox chassis and the aluminum die-cast swingarm with controlled filling technology. The total saving is 2.3 kg, also adding the lightening of the rear frame. The lateral and torsional rigidity of the frame has been revised, improving stability without compromising feeling and agility. There are also different steering dimensions, with the cannotto falling by 30 millimeters improving the feeeling with the front.
The swingarm is mounted differently with the hole inside and no longer outside the frame. New also the design that is linear abandoned the "banana" design of the previous version
The suspension package is also new, with a fully adjustable KYB inverted fork with 41 mm stems and a new adjustable mono shock absorber. The rims are 10-spoke spin forged units lightened by 700 grams compared to previous units, with great benefits in terms of gyroscopic inertia, pneumatic fittings in sizes 120/70 and 180/55.
The braking system counts on a front unit with Nissin clamp and radial pump with double 298 mm disc and single disc rear. All this allowed the new Yamaha MT-09 to stop the balance needle at 189 kg,4 less than the current model.
Also revised the transmission with longer ratios for first and second to adapt to the new engine supply. The gearbox has been completely redesigned to operate a new quickshifter that now offers both graft and scale support. Also revised the servo-assist and anti-slip clutch that has a lower load thanks to an unprecedented design of the cams.
With the arrival of the new six-axis inertial platform derived from the unit introduced on the R1 2015, the electronic assistance system is also updated, which allows the implementation of traction control (TCS) on three levels, slide control (SCS), soaring control (LIF) and the ABS with braking management (BC) that limits load transfers and rear lifting. Of course, the three accelerator mappings called D-mode remain.
Abandoned the technical part we come to the design, even more minimalist. The philosophy is called by Yamaha "Coverless" and leaves the mechanics and functional components as much on view as possible. The idea is to transmit sensations of power and torque through a marked centralization of the masses, accentuating the muscularity of the bike. All the elements have been centered towards the engine, highlighting, also thanks to the new color of the frame, the mechanical parts
Headlight, tank, saddle and exhaust were brought as close as possible to the engine. The new Crystal Graphite color of the frame has been chosen to highlight the quality of the mechanical parts. As with all MT, here too the look of the front optical group does not go unnoticed, it may or may not like it, but sure it does not already know seen. In any case, even for the two headlights it did not skimp being completely LED with the particular Y-shape of the rear unit.
The instrumentation is also new now with a color 3.5-inch TFT panel, with bar t-en eyelashes that change color as the rpm speed increases and decreases. The display includes, gear indicator, water and air temperature, clock and various other information.
The instrumentation integrates with the Yamaha My Ride app, available for iOS and Android, which allows you to record the data of each motorcycle ride, as well as to add photos of the trips to be shared then on social media.
The new Yamaha MT-09 will be available in three colors: Storm Fluo, Icon Blue and Tech Black. Deliveries to Yamaha dealers will start from March 2021.
